ABOUT KiON

INDUSTRIAL COATINGS

KiON Polysilazanes are polymers which have silicon and nitrogen atoms in their backbone. In addition to their widespread use as ceramic precursor materials in other markets, these inorganic polymers have now demonstrated wide utility in the clear-coat market segment, where they offer a combination of oxidation and corrosion resistance along with UV stability and high hardness. Additionally, KiON POlysilazane clear coats are thermally stable and remain clear and colorless at very high temperatures.

KiON Industrial Coatings are furnished read-to-apply. Two KiON Clear Coat products are available: KiON Acrylic Hybrid and KiON Urethane Hybrid. KiON Acrylic Hybrid and KiON Urethane Hybrid are clear coats which are thermally cured (a typical thermal cure schedule requires heating to temperatures in the vicinity of 150 deg-C). These “hybrid” clear coats offer the benefits of both an inorganic polymer and an organic polymer combined into a single coating. All clear coats can be conveniently applied by spraying, dipping, or brushing.

KiON Polysilazane products are also compatible with state-of-the-art automotive clear coat chemistries, which typically utilize acrylic and urethane ingredients. The use of KiON Industrial Coatings in corrosion resistant coatings for aluminum wheels is another opportunity. The unique chemistry of these polymers provides hard, chip-resistant coatings which have better adhesion to the aluminum wheel surface than any organic coating, and which do not yellow. KiON Industrial Coatings, when applied at thicknesses of 14 microns or greater, have demonstrated 300 hours of corrosion resistance (0% corrosion) on aluminum substrates when tested using the DIN 50021 copper-accelerated salt fog corrosion protocol.

Since KiON Polysilazanes adhere to a wide variety of substrates – metal, painted surface, glass, polymers – the use of KiON Polysilazanes is not limited to certain substrate materials. Clear optical coatings for glass or polymer-based lenses is, for instance, another possibility on polycarbonate or polymethylmethacrylate windows. Because of their excellent clarity, chip-resistance, and dirt-shedding properties KiON Industrial Coatings are also useful as clear coats for polished, decorative brass, copper, or aluminum. Applications include electrical or plumbing fixtures, light reflectors, and tarnish-resistant coatings for silver.
